Access to Jaffna : English Ver.

Access to Jaffna

There are 5 ways to get to Jaffna from Colombo.

1. Long-distance Bus (day-time service; private or CTB)
2. Night Bus
3. Train
4. Airplane
5. Chartered car

1. Long distance bus

There are 2 choices for long distance bus, but I don't recommend if you directly come to Jaffna from Colombo or to Colombo from Jaffna.
Because Most of Bus drivers drive with crazy speed... is that so often car accidents happen.

In a daytime, there are also many cows, goats, dogs, cats and old people on the road.... It seems like a dead race.
Also, you need to care about the problem for Water, bathroom, dry, back and forward Gravity, molesters, pickpockets... so I don't recommend.
If you have a time, you can stop over in Kandy, then Dambulla (Sigiriya), Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, then Jaffna.

You don't have time and choose the day-time bus, I strongly recommend the bus which via Puttalam to Jaffna.  If you chose via Kandy one, it would take soooooooooooo long time because of the traffic and road constructions.

2. Night bus
Night bus should be recommended for only people who are enough to be a physical strength...

:: pros and cons::

  • Pros:  Time effectively.  Security is much better than the daytime bus.
              (No passengers loading)
  • Cons: Until late night they play LOUD and Noisy Hindu music...
if you are a woman and sit next to Male, you may sometimes be molested. (There are Female seats, but sometimes if there are full passengers can't sit female seat. When you book the seat, you should check the availability)
The bus runs sooooo fast, you need to be careful car accidents. (well, you can't drive by yourself, so you should wear seat belt and chose the seat which is the middle of the bus.  Front and back are the most dangerous seat for car accidents!)

<HOW to Book>
In Colombo: You can find a booking counter at Wellawatta (Bus 100, 100, 154, 155) Most of Jaffna people recommend PPT.
PPT and the other bus service start from Marin Drive.

There is another one (I forgot the name) in front of Aprico in Wellawatta. You can get there by bus and get off at Apricobus stand.
That bus service start from also there, it is very convenient because it is along Galle Rd.

<About Car Accident>

Even Daytime or Nighttime, the bus runs soooo fast, it doesnt matter car accidents often happen if it is in daytime or night time. BUT I guess in a daytime, there are much more higher than night time because there are so many obstacles.

3. Train

Intercity 1st Class with A/C
Intercity2nd Class
I recommend "TRAIN", which has just open in 2014.
There is 1st Class AC train once a day.
From Jaffna, it is 13:45.
From Colombo is 5:45.
You can't reserve the seat by the internet, you need to go to station for reservation.

From Colombo, there are more services. 11:50 Intercity train is only available 2nd and 3rd Class Intercity. Intercity 2nd Class seat is not so bad, but no A/C, so always feel Dry and hot.  Your face will get dirty because of the open window and Fan before getting Jaffna.

Intercity 1st class AC train is VERY Beautiful and comfortable. If you can get up early, you should choose 5:45 1st class seat only Train.

5:45  1st class= 1500Rs.
11:50  2nd class=800Rs.

If you travel around, Colombo to Jaffna, I recommend Bus and because you can stop over each historical city on the way to Jaffna, then going back to Jaffna to Colombo by Train.

DON'T RIDE "Yal Devi".  That train is amazingly Uncomfortable car... I don't want to use it, never ever....  It has the 1st class car, but it is worse than 2nd Class Intercity or 3rd class Intercity maybe...
There is Night train service is available, but that is mail train. So it stops all stations between Jaffna and Colombo, so someone said they couldn't sleep in that car....  If you really need to move at night, I think bus should be better than night train.

Especially, in school holiday season and Sri Lankan holiday season, it is very very very difficult to reserve the seats. you have never been able to book it even if 1 month ahead. During Normal season, it is okay even if 1 day before.  But if you have a plan during the holiday season, you need to book asap.

④ Aeroplane
In Sri Lanka, there is no convenient domestic Flight Service.
You can only use "Helitour" which is run by Sri Lanka Air Force. You can book by the internet, but OFTEN that reservation server is DOWN and not available.  Even it is not full, it shows full.  So if you want to book, the best way is to visit their office.

Jaffna - Trinco - Colombo Flight service is available only Mon, Wed, Fri.  From Colombo around 7 o'clock.  And this Airport is not same as International airport in Negombo.   It is located in the south of the Colombo city.

Flight service is recommended to people who don't have time.
If you want to visit Trincomalee, Flight service should be the best choice. ( you can use Night bus too)

Jaffna Helitour office opens only 10:00-14:00, also, they go to the airport to pick up and send the passengers on Mon, Wed, Fri.
It means it actually opens Tue, Thu.  On Saturday, they open 10-12.  Even if that office the reservation server sometimes down, so sometimes you need to go there several times...
I recommend that if you have a plan to use their flight, you had better make a reservation as soon as possible...
